Mcleod Ganj Memoirs: A 4-Day Trip to India’s ‘Mini Tibet’

Enveloped by the snow-clad Dhauladhar mountains and nestled in the laps of the mighty Himalayas, McLeod Ganj is a favoured destination for a perfect weekend getaway especially from Delhi. With an interesting mix of backpackers, travellers, Tibetan and expat communities, McLeod Ganj has a peaceful yet vibrant aura that can encompass anyone.

McLeod Ganj is popularly known as ‘Mini Tibet’ or ‘Little Lhasa’ due to its large number of Tibetan settlement. Walking down the narrow lanes and colourful markets, you will pass by the orange and red-robed monks at every other corner. A widespread cafe culture due to hosting visitors from all around the world provides travellers with numerous options of amazing cafes, rooftops gardens, food joints and long-term staycations and work-cations (esp. post covid).

Each season in McLeod Ganj is a unique experience. The summer months of March through June experience a lot of tourist activity, as with major hill stations across India. Since spring and summer months are also ideal for activities like trekking and paragliding, travellers & adventure enthusiasts are especially drawn to McLeod Ganj during this period.

Travelling in rainy season is best to be avoided as natural calamities such as landslides, flash floods  and cloudbursts are frequent during this time, more so in the fragile mountainous regions. Post monsoons, however, the place turns into a beautiful lush green landscape. During the short-lived autumn or fall season, the places look straight out of fairy tales, dreamy hazy cool weather and trees with their autumn colors. The temperature in winters can drop to quite low and biting cold, accompanied by snowfall (in many regions across the state) sets in the valley.

Depending on the times of the year you choose to visit McLeod Ganj, here’s a list of things that you can do and see on a short 4-day trip to McLeod Ganj. Though 4 days is not really enough but if you are short on time, I hope this list will help you enjoy some of the best things to do in McLeod Ganj.

Day 1: Bhagsu Waterfall & Shiva Café or Dharamkot Village

About 12 km away from the bustling town of McLeod Ganj, sits the quiet little village of Bhagsu. Ice cold Bhagsu Waterfall cascading down the lush mountains is a major tourist attraction. Backpackers often go exploring and wandering about the place on day hikes.

A steep climb up the Bhagsu Waterfall along with some breathtaking views of the mountains lead you to the Shiva cafe – a very popular party spot among the backpackers. Much in contrast to the laid-back atmosphere of the Bhagsu village, the Shiva cafe becomes a lively spot for partying at night.

I had stayed in the another little village of Dharamkot, which is about 6ish km from McLeod Ganj. Though I had plans of visiting Bhagsu waterfall and Bhasgsu Nag temple, I for some reasons, couldn’t do it. I do not regret that at all and in fact, would suggest this as an alternative to day 1 plan, in case you want to just relax and enjoy the place and its serenity without having to trek or visit any party places.

Day 2: Exploring Dharamsala

Head to Dharamsala (also spelled Dharamshala), which is around 10 km from McLeod Ganj. Explore the city to experience the Tibetan culture and visit the famous monasteries in and around Dharamsala. Depending on the weather and season, you can go paragliding and witness the heavenly landscape as you glide past.

For the later part of the day, you can explore the kitchens and relish on some of the most delicious food. For the food-lovers, there’s no dearth of eateries. Apart from the famous ‘momos’ or dumplings, you can find all kinds of cuisines, including but not limited to Indian, Italian, Korean and Israeli.

I had stumbled upon this place in with amazing vegan food options. Had tried their vegan Frittatas and pizza and it was the most delicious.

Day 3: Trekking and Camping At Triund

To add more thrill to your travel, head off for a refreshing trek to Triund hill. It is an moderate-easy 7 km trek. The trail passes through oak, cedar and rhododendron forests and offers amazing views of Dhauladhar mountain ranges and the Kangra valley.

Enjoy a hot cup of tea and Maggi to refuel during the trek. Witness the most exhilarating views of the mountain and valleys as you make it to the summit. Camp at Triund and experience the magnificence of the spectacular mountains and the star-studded night sky.

For the more adventurous souls (esp. those with some extra time at hand) Indrahar Pass trek can also be a great option. Either villages of Bhagsu and Dharamkot can be the starting point for the Indrahar Pass trek.

Day 4: Exploring McLeod Ganj

Return to McLeod Ganj after the incredible trekking and camping adventure at Triund (or Indrahar Pass). For a soulful experience, visit the Dalai Lama Temple located in the heart of McLeod Ganj. Abode of Dalai Lama, it is a must-visit place for many travellers.

The temple complex itself is beautiful and peaceful. You can learn interesting facts about the Tibetan religion, history and culture by visiting the museum that is in the temple complex.

Stroll through the markets, shop for souvenirs, relish on some good food or strike up conversations with the friendly locals in the lively streets of McLeod Ganj one last time, before you bid a farewell to Dhauladhar and head back to your respective city or town.
